description | The Titanosaurus was a genus of sauropod that reached sizes of up to 40 feet long. For a long time, the existence of Titanosaurus as a discrete genus served only as a home for anomalous sauropod fossils that were suspected of being a distinct genus. Over time, however, many of the features that distinguish Titanosaurus have been found to be quite common in other sauropod remains.Titanosaurus is often depicted as a burly sauropod, like Apatasaurus or Diplodocus, but with a thicker, broader neck and shorter tail. However, these reconstructions are considered dubious at best, since it is not known for certain if a specific sauropod genus of Titanosaurus exists.Titanosaurus is also the name of a fictional Kaiju monster in Godzilla films. This creature is not related to the pre-historic Titanosaurus. It is depicted as bipedal, with a distinctive crest atop its head. If an illustration shows Titanosaurus walking about on two legs, it is probably not a dinosaur but a rampaging Kaiju! |
